Somaini, Diego; Knobloch, Markus; Fontana, Mario | Buckling of steel columns in fire: non-linear behaviour and design proposal | Steel Construction | 3/2012 | 175-182 | Articles |
KurzfassungIn a fire the buckling strength of steel columns is heavily influenced by the distinctly non-linear material behaviour of steel at elevated temperatures. A general analytical model that explicitly includes the non-linear material behaviour is presented here and verified with full-scale tests at elevated temperature. Based on test results and this general model, a new model for flexural buckling is developed which can be used to design slender columns and allows non-linear stress-strain relationships, geometrical imperfections and load eccentricities to be considered. In addition, the model can be easily extended to include local cross-section instabilities describing the interaction between local and global buckling phenomena. x

KurzfassungThe buckling of masonry wall depends on the deformation behaviour and can be described with the modulus of elasticity depending on masonry strength. The reduction factor solution considering buckling is described by the Gaussian bell-shaped curve in Eurocode 6, Part 1-1 Annex G and was calibrated for masonry with a modulus of elasticity between 700 and 1000 fk, which describes the masonry currently used in most European countries. In case of historic masonry or where deformability is needed in new construction, the modulus of elasticity can actually be lower. In those cases the approximation procedure according to Annex G of the Eurocode 6 delivers results which do not represent the real behaviour and leads to uneconomical results. The present paper proposes a new empirical method, which can be applied over the whole practical range of the elastic modulus of masonry. The new proposed method has been verified with experimental data and shows a very good fit. x

Jansseune, Arne; Belis, Jan; De Corte, Wouter | Buckling design of axially compressed steel silos on discrete supports - Comparison between FE-calculated buckling strengths and Eurocode interaction curves | Steel Construction | 1/2018 | 10-15 | Articles |
KurzfassungThis paper compares the buckling strengths derived from a validated shell-based FEM model of discretely supported axially compressed silos with the interaction curves given in EN 1993-1-6 for axial compression. The buckling strengths were numerically determined for a wide range of geometries and yield strengths, considering two configuration types of discretely supported steel silos: with engaged columns and partial-height U-shaped longitudinal stiffeners. For these types, remarkably good correspondence was found between the numerical results of discretely supported steel silos and the interaction curves for uniformly compressed cylindrical steel silos, although unconservative in many cases. x

Camotim, Dinar; Basaglia, Cilmar | Buckling analysis of thin-walled steel structures using generalized beam theory (GBT): state-of-the-art report | Steel Construction | 2/2013 | 117-131 | Articles |
KurzfassungThis paper addresses the use of generalized beam theory (GBT) to analyse the local and global buckling behaviour of thin-walled steel members and structural systems. After a brief historical perspective of GBT developments, the main concepts and procedures involved in performing buckling analyses are summarized in a systematic fashion. That is followed by a state-of-the-art report concerning the most recent GBT formulations and applications that have been developed to assess the buckling behaviour of members, frames and trusses with various loading and support conditions. In order to illustrate the unique modal features and show the potential of the GBT approach to buckling analysis, numerical results and a few practical applications are presented and discussed; for validation purposes, most of these results are compared with values yielded by shell finite element analyses, performed in the ABAQUS and ANSYS programs. The paper closes with a few words on the future perspectives of GBT-based buckling analysis. x
