Many thousand people commute daily into Lugano in the south of Switzerland and the city has been suffering under this heavy traffic for decades. Therefore the Canton of Tessin and the local councils in the Lugano local transport area agreed twenty years ago a mobility plan including numerous construction measures. On of the most impressive structures is the Vedeggio-Cassarate Tunnel on the approach route to Lugano from the north. This has a length of 2,630 m and links the Vedeggio Valley to the west with the Cassarate Valley to the east. The three main sections of the tunnel are described as the rock section, the loose ground section and the cut-and-cover section. The tunnel was driven under a built-up area, with one school and several blocks of flats inside the area affected by the works. The essential construction challenges were tunnelling under the most important Swiss railway line under continued operation, the protection of listed historic buildings and tunnelling through loose ground below the groundwater table.
Nach Lugano in der Südschweiz pendeln täglich mehrere zehntausend Menschen. Unter diesem hohen Verkehrsaufkommen leidet die Stadt seit Jahrzehnten. Deshalb beschlossen der Kanton Tessin und die Gemeinden des Nahverkehrsbereichs von Lugano bereits vor über zwanzig Jahren einen Mobilitätsplan, der auch zahlreiche Baumaßnahmen umfasst. Eines der herausragenden Bauwerke ist der Tunnel Vedeggio-Cassarate, der die nördliche Einfallachse nach Lugano darstellt. Mit einer Länge von 2.630 m verbindet er das Vedeggio-Tal im Westen mit dem Cassarate-Tal im Osten. Drei Hauptstrecken des Bauwerks sind als Felsstrecke, Lockergesteins- und Tagebaustrecke gekennzeichnet. Der Tunnelvortrieb erfolgte unter bebautem Stadtgebiet; eine Schule und einige Mehrfamilienhäuser befanden sich im direkten Einflussbereich der Arbeiten. Die wesentlichen bautechnischen Herausforderungen waren die Unterquerung der wichtigsten Schweizer Bahnlinie unter Verkehr, der Schutz der geschützten historischen Bauten und die Durchquerung der Lockergesteinsstrecke im Grundwasser.

Ein instrumentell und methodisch völlig neuartiges Vermessungsverfahren ist dabei, bisher sehr aufwendige Arbeiten im Bereich der präzisen Bestands- und Anlagendokumentation zu revolutionieren. An die Stelle einzelner objektdefinierender Zielpunkte treten nunmehr Hunderttausende Rasterpunkte, welche durch vektorielle Abtastung mit einem terrestrischen Laser-Scanner in Minutenschnelle erfaßt werden. Die so gewonnene räumliche Punktwolke kann sofort betrachtet und bearbeitet werden. Mehrere solcher Punktwolken können miteinander verkettet und in ein definiertes Koordinatensystem transformiert werden. Das Potential des Aufnahmeverbandes liegt vor allem in der Möglichkeit der direkten Modellierung und Objektgenerierung für ein CAD.

This article deals with the production of veneer walls as specified in DIN EN 1996-2/NA [3]. Against this background of the extensive revision of the section for veneer walls an exposition in accordance with the previous requirements as specified in DIN 1053-1 can hardly be recommended. The necessity for a basic revision of the section for veneer wall construction has already been discussed in detail and justified in several technical articles published in previous years, see [4] to [7].
With many changes and corrections in the section for veneer walls in the National Annex of DIN EN 1996-2 [8] it is certainly not a question of new rules for this method of building, but an adjustment of the requirements in the previous standard on the basis of the practical experience gained over several years. The new requirements for the execution of cavity facing masonry enable a simple and economic implementation of this external wall construction.
