90 years Steel Construction at the research centre in Karlsruhe, Germany

The appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Gaber to the University of Technology at Karlsruhe in 1921 gave the go-ahead for the “Testing Room Gaber”, from which the Versuchsanstalt für Stahl, Holz und Steine (Research Centre for Steel, Timber and Masonry) developed later. Today, the research center is part of Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT) consisting of the departments Wood Construction and Structural Design as well as of Steel and Lightweight Structures. In the following contribution it is looked back on the history of this institution related to Steel Construction.

Professor Akimitsu Kurita reaches 65
Prof. Dr.-Eng. Akimitsu Kurita, Professor at the Osaka Institute of Technology, celebrated his 65th birthday on 23 August 2011. For more than 30 years Prof. Kurita is engaged in research and practical design of steel composite bridges as well as earthquake and fire engineering.

Civil and structural engineering landmarks in Brussels

Launching a new journal in a highly competitive business environment is no minor achievement. During these 3 years, several milestones were reached that provide a solid basis for the establishment of a leading journal in this field.

Cover Story: Work to upgrade the Westbahn line to a modern high-speed line has been under way since the 1980s. Because of the route and the topographical conditions, a number of tunnels are required. The requirements for rail tunnels have changed significantly since the start of tunnel construction for the upgrading of the Westbahn line, while mechanised tunnelling has made great progress. The article on side 347 explains the procedure used by the client for the selection of a method of tunnelling.

Revision of the DAfStb Guideline on Concrete Repairs - Status Update

Several working groups involving interested circles are working on a revision of the guideline "Protection and Repair of Concrete Members" (Concrete Repair Guideline) of the Deutscher Ausschuss für Stahlbeton e.V. (DAfStb). The following report provides an early update on which direction the revision and update of the guideline is planned to take.
