Blanchard, J.; Bussell, M.; Marsden, A.; Lewis, D. | Appraisal of existing ferrous metal structures (Bewertung von historischen Stahl- und Eisenkonstruktionen). | Stahlbau | 6/1997 | 333-345 | Fachthemen |

KurzfassungMany problems in engineered rock faces involve evaluation of the efficiency of rockfall mitigation measures, specifically rockfall dams, embankments and catch nets. Existing rockfall trajectory models are not suited for this purpose because they do not consider the non-linear dynamics of rock motion, which is highly dependent on rock size, shape and impact configuration. In this paper, we discuss the application of the new 3D rockfall modelling tool RAMMS::Rockfall, which computes rock-ground interactions using hard-contact impact mechanics. The model is applied to evaluate the effectiveness of a rockfall bank at the Geobrugg/WSL test site in Walenstadt, Switzerland. x

KurzfassungTransportation infrastructure projects are characterised by long project phases, a high number of project participants, hard-to-predict influences and their uniqueness. The new version of the ÖGG “Guideline for the Cost Determination for Transportation Infrastructure Projects” builds on experience of the previous version and sets new accents in practical applicability, e.g. through the use of risk fact sheets. Structured cost and risk management is no longer conceivable without adequate software. The integral cost and schedule analysis is a further step towards improved cost and project schedule stability. The guideline was published in English at the same time, which supports its use in international consulting. x

Moritz, B.; Schubert, W. | Application of the observational method in geotechnical safety management / Die Umsetzung der Beobachtungsmethode im Rahmen des Geotechnischen Sicherheitsmanagements | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 3/2009 | 269-281 | Topics |
KurzfassungThe uncertainties in the ground model and the subsequent design of tunnels call for an observational approach. To enable the safe and economical tunnelling of underground infrastructure projects with shallow overburden, a safety management plan has to be implemented. The successful application of the observational method is based on a comprehensive definition of the expected behaviour by the designer and the verification of the actual conditions by the site geotechnical engineer during construction. Advanced tools and methods for monitoring data evaluation assist in the continuous interpretation of the system behaviour, enable timely detection of deviations and check against the warning and alarm criteria. The paper shows the application of the observational method as defined in Eurocode 7 as part of a Safety Management Plan through two case histories from OeBB tunnel projects. x

KurzfassungThe consistent application of the observation method on shield tunnel drives can make a considerable contribution to preventative dispute avoidance and conflict reduction when issues occur. The observation method should include not only the monitoring and analysis of mechanical process data such as machine data, control parameters and data from the geotechnical instrumentation but also process control as the tunnel advances, which is documented in the following quality assurance documents: explanatory report, machine concept, incident analysis, specification, tunnelling machine handbook and the tunnelling plan before tunnelling and report after completion. This should be interpreted as a unit and is defined as the holistic observation method. x

KurzfassungFor highly insulated clay masonry units, fire resistance is verified in the course of the approval procedure through fire tests according to harmonised European standards. The fire resistance class in the relevant national technical approval is then based on these tests. Classification according to these testing standards in combination with the extrapolation standard DIN EN 15080-12 represents a justifiable option for the fire resistance classification of masonry walls according to harmonised European standards. x

KurzfassungThe resistance of aggregates to abrasion estimated by the Micro-Deval test is an important mechanical parameter for aggregates used as railway ballast. At present, testing intervals are sparse due to the cost of the tests. Cost-efficient testing methods would be greatly appreciated. A detailed study of the applicability of alternative testing methods, as commonly used to estimate the potential of a rock or soil to cause wear to a tool (LCPC Abroy test and Cerchar test), demonstrates the advantage of implementing these testing methods in addition to the recommended tests. x

KurzfassungThe environmental impact and the effect of its reduction must be assessed quantitatively if we are to show clearly the effect of lowering the environmental impact of concrete and concrete structures. One of the quantitative evaluation methods is to regard and verify the environmental impact of concrete and concrete structures as an environmental performance in accordance with the performance-based design method. This article briefly describes the performance-based environmental design method prepared by fib Commission 3 TG3.6 and shows an example of the application of the design method applied to a concrete structure. x
Palla, R.; Leitner, S. | Application of jet grouting on the various contracts in the Lower Inn Valley / Anwendung des Düsenstrahlverfahrens auf den verschiedenen Baulosen im Unterinntal | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 6/2009 | 693-708 | Topics |
KurzfassungThe jet grouting process is being applied in a number of ways never attempted before as part of the four-track improvement of the Lower Inn Valley line. In addition to the production of waterproof invert, ground improvement to reduce settlement and for the homogenisation of the excavation cross-section in mixed face sections, special mined solutions in particular have been made possible by jet grouting. A horizontal jet grout screen for advance tunnel support was produced for the first time under compressed air conditions; the protection of a complete ringshaped jet-grouted surround also made a mined compressed air drive possible. The jet grouting process was also used to carry out sealing blocks to enable the mined connection of various mechanically tunnelled rescue tunnels to the main tunnel driven by a TBM. x
Le, Hanh Quang; Do, Phong Ngoc | Application of inclined big-diameter jet grouting for urban tunnel construction in Vietnam | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 3/2023 | 312-319 | Topics |
KurzfassungUrban tunnel construction is often performed in congested areas with many buildings and historical structures nearby. With respect to developing countries, such as Vietnam, the lack of as-built drawings of existing buildings is a big challenge for urban tunnel development. There are a lot of private buildings in downtown are low rise, with many kinds of shallow foundations (from bamboo bar, brick mat, lean concrete mat, pre-casted concrete piles...) that add to the challenge of finding correct data. Consequently, one must find suitable and reasonable technology for the soil strengthening works in order to prevent the harmful impacts to the third -party properties and the tunnel structure itself. This paper introduces the inclined big-diameter jet-grouted column (iBDJ) technique that was recently applied with success in Hanoi Metro Line No3 project in Vietnam. This technique for protecting historical sensitive buildings that are in fuzzy of foundation information can be extended to urban tunnel projects in Vietnam and other countries which have similar conditions. x

Schiborr, Markus; Stranghöner, Natalie | Application of direct tension indicators in preloaded bolted connections | Steel Construction | 2/2017 | 176-188 | Articles |
KurzfassungThe direct tension indicator (DTI) method is specified in EN 1090-2 as one of the tightening procedures for preloading bolting assemblies to a specified level of preload. As Germany so far has no experience of using the DTI method, recent experimental and theoretical investigations were carried at the Institute for Metal and Lightweight Structures, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, with the main focus being the loadbearing behaviour of preloaded bolting assemblies with DTIs under external axial tensile loading. Whereas tension connections employing preloaded bolting assemblies are quite common in Germany, in the UK, for example, bolted connections are preferably designed as shear connections, as far as is known. As a result of the investigations presented below, it can be summarized that, under tensile loading especially, preloaded bolting assemblies with DTIs might suffer from a severe loss of preload - something that should be considered in preloaded bolted connections in which the preload is taken into account in the design of the connections, e.g. in slip-resistant connections, to activate the slip resistance, and in tension connections subjected to fatigue. Based on these investigations, recommendations have been formulated for preloaded bolting assemblies with DTIs under external axial tensile loading. x

KurzfassungThe interaction of tunnel boring machines with the rock mass is highly influenced by human, technical and geological factors. Interpretation of geological observations and TBM data is currently done on a subjective basis. Technologies based on Artificial Intelligence research, can be used to automatically classify TBM data into rock mass behaviour types. Albeit first results look promising, any technology poses the threat of malicious use that deliberately harms / benefits one or another party. x

KurzfassungThe Conrad Observatory in the state of Lower Austria is a geophysical research and development facility of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). The isolation of the tunnel system fulfils the optimal requirements for high-precision measurements. The client specified shotcrete class EV700 for the plastic fibre-reinforced shotcrete, i.e. the test bodies have to show an energy absorption capacity of at least 700 J in the slab test. The quality verification for the suitability of a fibre-reinforced shotcrete is performed according to the ÖVBB guideline “Sprayed Concrete” with a slab test as defined in the Austrian standard ÖNORM EN 14488-5, which can determine the energy absorption capacity and assign the shotcrete to an energy absorption class. The test rig used at the Chair of Subsurface Engineering is described, together with test results from different plastic fibre shotcretes from various testing institutes. x
