KurzfassungTwo-component grout is nowadays the most popular backfilling technique, used widely in rock or soil thanks to its versatility and the undoubted advantages for operatives compared to other backfilling technologies. Despite its intensive adoption in shielded tunnelling projects, very poor and often fragmented information is available, especially on the engineering properties used for the mix design calibration (design phase) and secondly on construction sites as the acceptance protocol (operative phase). In this work, starting from real construction sites data, an analysis has been performed in order to determine the intrinsic characteristics of the two-component grout technology. Moreover, the most frequently used engineering parameters have been identified to characterise both component A and the hardened grout, correlated with their usage frequency. The outcomes illustrate that although at the current time different choices are made at different construction sites, a pattern of tests has been recognised, that can be considered as a significant cornerstone for the characterisation of two-component grout. x
Todisco, Leonardo; Reineck, Karl-Heinz; Bayrak, Oguzhan | European design rules for point loads near supports evaluated with data from shear tests on non-slender beams with vertical stirrups | Structural Concrete | 2/2016 | 135-144 | Technical Papers |
KurzfassungThis paper includes a presentation of a shear test database that contains 278 tests conducted on reinforced concrete beams with vertical stirrups and no horizontal skin reinforcement. These beams are commonly referred to as non-slender beams since they were tested using loading arrangements that created shear span-to-depth ratios a/d < 2.4. In an effort to arrive at a database that can be used for the purposes of evaluating the accuracy and conservativeness of design provisions, several control and filtering criteria were applied. After this process, 178 beams remained in the evaluation database. The analyses conducted using this database indicated that the application of the strut-and-tie models (STM) of Eurocode 2 (EC2) to non-slender beams with stirrups is unconservative, i.e. the database analyses yielded results that were above the desired 5 % fractile. Almost all unconservative strength estimations were obtained for test specimens containing large numbers of stirrups. Conversely, statistical evaluations showed that the FIP Recommendations model for beams with point loads near supports is conservative. x

KurzfassungThe aims of this study are to find a solution for the problems (lumping, adhesion, and clogging) encountered with fine-grained sedimentary materials, minimize the time and cost of excavation, and decrease the potential environmental effects due to soil conditioning chemicals used in the process of excavating a waste water tunnel. Therefore, this study will contribute important technical knowledge regarding design and implementation of excavation with TBM to the mining and construction industries as well as for optimization in mechanical engineering. x
Tomazevic, M.; Gams, M. | Seismic Behaviour of Confined Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Masonry Buildings: a Shaking Table Study | Mauerwerk | 3/2010 | 153-160 | Berichte |
KurzfassungThe seismic behaviour of typical residential confined masonry buildings constructed with aerated autoclaved concrete (AAC) blocks has been investigated. Two three- and one four-storey models, constructed at 1 : 4 scale, have been tested by subjecting them to a simulated earthquake ground motion on a simple unidirectional seismic simulator. The floor plan of all models was the same, with symmetric distribution of walls along the shorter axis and slight asymmetry along the longer one. Lightweight prefabricated joists with AAC fillings without concrete topping represented the floor structures in the case of the three-storey model M1, whereas reinforced concrete slabs have been cast in the case of the three-storey model M2 and four-story model M3. Bond beams have been provided at all floor levels and tie columns have been installed at all corners, wall intersections and along openings. The models have been instrumented with accelerometers and displacement transducers, placed in the middle and at the corners of the floor slabs at each floor level, and subjected to a series of excitations with increased intensity of motion in each successive test run. The acceleration record of the Montenegro earthquake of 1979 with peak ground acceleration of 0.43 g has been used to drive the simulator. Whereas models M2 and M3 have been tested by subjecting them to seismic motion in the direction of the long axis, model M1 has been tested orthogonal to it. In all cases, typical shear type behaviour has been observed, with diagonally oriented cracks in the walls in the first story determining the failure mechanism. All models exhibited good seismic behaviour, with resistance and energy dissipation capacity exceeding the expected values. On the basis of test results, the correlation between the damage and storey drift at characteristic limit states has been analyzed and the values of typical design parameters, such as displacement capacity and structural behaviour factor, have been evaluated. x

KurzfassungExperience regarding the testing of models of masonry buildings on simple shaking tables is discussed. It is stressed that because scale effects affect some phenomena and influence the dynamic response, only overall seismic behaviour of structural systems can be studied by testing reduced size models, and not structural details. The basic principles of physical modelling are explained and options for preparing different types of models presented. The test facility, needed for simulation of earthquake ground motion, is described and pointers are given for the selection of simulated earthquakes. Some practical cases of model shaking table studies are also presented. x

Tori , Neno; Boko, Ivica; Juradin, Sandra; Baloevi , Goran | Mechanical properties of lightweight concrete after fire exposure | Structural Concrete | 6/2016 | 1071-1081 | Technical Papers |
KurzfassungThe paper presents an experimental research project that focused on analysing the short-term residual mechanical properties of lightweight concrete after exposure to temperatures of up to 600 °C and the effects of the short-term residual mechanical properties on the post-fire loadbearing capacity of different concrete sections. The experimental programme was conducted on four different concrete mixes by determining the mechanical properties immediately after cooling and up to 96 h after cooling. The following properties were investigated: compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity and stress-strain curves. The results show that the compressive strength undergoes an additional reduction in comparison to the initial residual strength (0 h property) of up to 20 % in the reference time period. A numerical study is presented at the end of the paper in order to quantify the effects of the short-term strength reduction on the axial loadbearing capacity of slender and stocky concrete columns. x
Torres, Lluis; Neocleous, Kyriacos; Pilakoutas, Kypros | Design procedure and simplified equations for the flexural capacity of concrete members reinforced with fibre-reinforced polymer bars | Structural Concrete | 2/2012 | 119-129 | Articles |
KurzfassungThe predominant failure mode of concrete members reinforced with fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is flexural, due to either concrete crushing or FRP rupture. Many design tools have been developed for the flexural design of FRP-reinforced concrete. These tools are sufficiently accurate, but an iterative procedure is required when dealing with flexural failure due to FRP rupture. In addition, despite the fact that the design concepts involved are similar to those used for conventional steel-reinforced concrete, the changes in the design philosophy and the linear behaviour up to rupture of the FRP bars lead to the sectional properties having a different influence on the design, which not everyone may be familiar with. Therefore, this study proposes a general methodology for evaluating the design flexural capacity of FRP-reinforced concrete sections. This methodology is based on the design provisions of Eurocode 2 and comprises non-dimensional, closed-form equations, derived independently of the concrete and FRP characteristics. The proposed methodology can be used to derive universal dimensionless design charts as well as tables. The accuracy of the proposed design tools has been verified by comparing the predictions with the experimental results of 98 beams, which are available in the published literature. x

Totoev, Yuri | Classification of SIM infill panels / Klassifikation von SIM-Ausfachungswänden | Mauerwerk | 1/2015 | 74-79 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungSIM is an innovative building system for mortar-less walls. It utilises a special method of interlocking SIM bricks that allows relative sliding of brick courses in-plane of a wall and prevents out-of-plane relative movement of bricks. One of its structural applications is in multistorey frame buildings as earthquake resistant masonry infill panels. It improves energy dissipation of frame structures during earthquakes. The energy dissipation occurs through friction between bricks as they engage in relative sliding by the frame vibrating during earthquake. This paper explains the novelty of SIM and offers classification of SIM panels based on the gap width between the frame and the top of the panel. x |
