Amvrazis, Seraphim; Voit, Klaus; Cordes, Tobias; Bergmeister, Konrad | Drill and blast excavation forecasting using 3D laser scanning / Ausbruchprognose beim Sprengvortrieb mittels 3D-Laserscanning | Geomechanics and Tunnelling | 3/2017 | 298-316 | Topics |
KurzfassungThe application of 3D laser scanning technology in tunnelling has gained increasing significance in recent years. Laser scanning is an innovative holistic approach for data acquisition in tunnelling regarding the geometrical parameters. It is a distance-based imaging technique for three-dimensional and high-resolution illustration (3D point cloud) of the surrounding rock that can be applied at various times to provide a variety of visualization and analysis possibilities. A new approach deals with excavation forecasting by linking the acquisition of the 3D geometry of previously excavated rounds with the geological documentation of the tunnel face. This approach enables the gathering of information about the expected overbreak or underprofile of subsequent excavation in similar rock conditions. Using this information, an optimization of the borehole positions (especially of the peripheral boreholes) can achieve the best possible excavation profile. This approach offers an improvement of excavation performance and saving potential with regard to excavation quantity and shotcrete consumption. The uniform excavation shape and consistent shotcrete thickness improve tunnel stability and finally increases the service life the tunnel structure. x

Wöhlecke, Andreas; Müller, Werner W. | Der Zugversuch an Dichtungsbahnen - Kennwerte, Einwirkungen, prüftechnische Durchführung | geotechnik | 3/2017 | 186-192 | Fachthemen |
Haselsteiner, Ronald; Ersoy, Burcu; Pamuk, Resul | Aspects concerning the shear strength of rockfill material in rockfill dam engineering | geotechnik | 3/2017 | 193-203 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungThe stress-dependent shear strength behaviour of rockfill is frequently estimated by simple shear strength parameter. A linear shear relation between vertical and shear stresses is almost always applied. However, the actual shear strength behaviour of rockfill differs from this theoretical line. A curve is formed which indicates that strong shear strength at low stresses gradually decreases with increasing stress. x

KurzfassungIn line with the general trend to improved energy-related properties of buildings in massive construction, many massive buildings have been designed and built in recent years, which have proactively observed and also helped to determine the specification of future building standards in Europe. According to [1], the first low-energy house was built in Kassel in 1986 with an area-related energy demand for hot water and heating of only 60 kWh/(m2a). The use of massive building materials with low thermal conductivity played a similarly important role in this case to the increasing use of thermal insulation materials and new building services technology using renewable energy sources. Keeping the constructional details simple to build by tradesmen in order to avoid thermal bridging and useless building mistakes was and is still an important practical requirement. With the help of examples, the article demonstrates that monolithic construction is suitable for compliance with current energy-related requirements and how this is carried out. x
Gunkler, Erhard; Marx, Johann Jakob; Blum, Carsten | Shear resistance of reinforced masonry beams with and without additional concrete or prestress / Querkrafttragfähigkeiten von bewehrten Mauerwerksbalken mit und ohne Aufbeton oder Vorspannung | Mauerwerk | 3/2017 | 155-167 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungThis article investigates the transferability of the Simplified Modified Compression Field Theory (SMCFT) [2], which is known in reinforced concrete design and included in the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 (Volume 3) [1], to reinforced or prestressed masonry beams (RM beams) with or without an additional layer of concrete. The investigation for this work is the obsolete shear design concept that has been used until now for reinforced masonry under shear loading, which does not adequately reflect the actual load-bearing behaviour of significant areas of masonry. The fundamentals of the SMCFT are explained and the transferability of the theory to RM beams is examined, taking into account in particular the different material properties of masonry compared to reinforced concrete. A first approach for future application is represented by the equations presented here for the determination of the shear force capacity of RM beams. The verification is performed through a comparison of the shear resistances determined experimentally (exp.) and by calculation (calc.). x
Bothe, Eckard; Hinze, Sirko; Schöps, Peter | Structural calculation of existing masonry arch bridges / Nachrechnung gemauerter Bogenbrücken | Mauerwerk | 3/2017 | 168-178 | Fachthemen |
KurzfassungFor masonry bridges with small spans built before 1900, there are often no documents available since such bridges were often built from experience. Surveying is often restricted to the visible parts of the structure. Geometrical assistance in the form of drilling cores is only ever at points, which inevitably have to be interpolated. Large parts of these structures are in the ground (abutments, foundations) and are largely inaccessible for adequate geometrical recording. The constitutive laws for the existing masonry can only be described with reasonable effort through minimum values from regulations. The article describes a procedure with additions to the missing documents from experience to obtain statements about the load-bearing capacity based on approximate models, which permit categorisation into decisive bridge classes based on the regulations for the structural analysis of existing road bridges and also enable usable results for the comparison between the result of categorisation and special load cases for heavy transport. x

KurzfassungA large part of buildings in Central European cities like Vienna was built in the Gründerzeit period between about 1840 and 1918 [1]. These buildings were constructed according to traditional rules. Current urban development requires historic buildings to be structurally adapted, which requires retroactive analysis of the masonry walls; in Austria according to ÖNORM EN 1998-3 [2] and ÖNORM EN 1996-3 (EC 6) [3]. Here, special focus is on the load transfer of horizontal earthquake loads, i. e. the shear strength of masonry walls. x

KurzfassungIn June 2006, the Chair of Structural Design at the Technical University of Dresden was commissioned by the Iranian cultural authority ICHHTO and the UNESCO to perform structural design services for the earthquake-resistant repair and rebuilding of the Sistani House in the historic citadel Arg-e-Bam in the south of Iran. The citadel was until its almost complete destruction by an earthquake on 26 Dezember 2003 the largest building of unburnt brick masonry in the world and is listed as a World heritage Site by UNESCO because of its cultural and historical significance. Surveying and documentation work, archaeological rubble clearance and the rebuilding of the Sistani House after its destruction by the earthquake have taken the team from the department to Bam at regular intervals since 2006. In the course of the work, it became apparent that research was needed in the field of the repair of earthquake-damaged unburnt brick masonry and into the improvement of the shear strength/earthquake resistance and the weather protection of unburnt brick masonry. x |
