KurzfassungThe exceptional apartment building project from HPA+ Architektur in Bergisch Gladbach has altogether six varied residential units in a total usable floor area of about 600 m2. Clay masonry units were chosen for the facade material of the three buildings, with detailed planning being necessary to enable the maintenance of all crossing, bed and head joints in all parts of the facade. Other materials in addition to clay masonry are exposed concrete and galvanised steel, which should give the most “rough” possible appearance. Another special feature of the project is the projecting gables, which are provided with insulation to the underside, resulting in a continuous external envelope. KurzfassungThe Cuevas del Pino estate sits in the foothills of Sierra Morena, in calcarenite stone terrain arranged in a slightly sloping strata that gives rise to various geological formations native to the area, among these are caves which resulted from quarrying that supplied Cordoba with stone during its most splendorous centuries. The architects have created a new spatial experience that manages to value the tectonic nature of the area through the use of new architectural elements. (Photo: David Vico) x

KurzfassungPolygonal brick facade decorates building complex in the Swiss Riehen. Despite the meanwhile more than 21, 000 inhabitants, Riehen could preserve its former village character. A residential complex with three apartment buildings developed in the passage from the houses in the village centre lying close to each other to the loosely built living quarters at the village border. The new buildings with three full storeys and each with a circumferentially recessed attic floor host overall 29 condominiums with flexible floor plans. All apartments are designed age appropriately and barrier free. The polygonal building structures break the block-edge and stand in a park-like designed environment like clods. KurzfassungSlate facade in the DomRömer-Quartier, Frankfurt. In the completely new old town centre, the DomRömer-Quartier, 15 of 35 houses were built according to historic guidelines as “creative new buildings”. A further 20 “modern” buildings have been built on the basis of the historic town plan and according to the guidelines of the DomRömer design rules. The pattern of the slates to the gable front in the attic storey is worth mentioning. Instead of the usual laying to the right, the architect decided on a facade, in which the slating pattern runs to the left and right of the central window with left- and right-handed slating and thus forms a symmetrical gable. KurzfassungIf you are looking for long-lasting, large-area rendered facades with elegant stucco mouldings and bosses, you don't need stresses. The decisive factor here is a high-performance render with matched system layers. And more so if architectural design and constructional details for style reasons do not assist stress relief and weather protection. The residential and office building in Bünde presents itself prestigious and quite without stress due thanks to the innovative it technology of Schwenk Putztechnik (photo: Andres Gomez/Schwenk Putztechnik) x

KurzfassungFjordenhus (Fjord House), Vejle, Denmark, commissioned by KIRK KAPITAL, is the first building designed by Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann with Studio Olafur Eliasson. Rising out of the water, Fjordenhus forges a striking new connection between Vejle Fjord and the city centre of Vejle. Accessible by footbridge, the twenty-eight-metre-high building is formed by four intersecting cylinders with brick facades from which ellipsoidal negative spaces were removed to create complex curved forms and arched windows. The double-height ground floor, which is open to the public, is permeated by the fjord and contains two aqueous zones with site-specific artworks by Olafur Eliasson. (see p. 50 ff.)
