Thin-walled cold-formed steel elements represent an attractive structural solution due to the fast manufacturing and erection time on-site. Their small thickness leads to imperfection and sensitivities to eccentricities. An experimental programme was performed on short members with lipped channel cross section, subjected to eccentric compression about the minor and major axes, in a large range of eccentricities. The European Steel Bridge Awards are given by ECCS every two years to encourage the creative and outstanding use of steel in construction of bridges. Among 23 projects received from all over Europe, three winning projects were awarded during the 2022 ESBA Ceremony, which took place on 21st September 2022 in Istanbul. The winning project in the category “Cycle and Pedestrian Bridges” was the “Bridge De Lille Langebro” in Denmark (Foto: Rasmus Hjortshøj - COAST). S. the complete news on p. 270.

In April 2020, the world's first submerged full size slip joint was installed in the Borssele V offshore wind farm. An extensive qualification programme in terms of numerical modelling and testing (see photo) was set up prior to installing the slip joint. The Borssele V offshore wind farm offered a unique opportunity to demonstrate to the industry that the slip joint connection is fully feasible, certified and ready for practical implementation (s. paper Suur, S; Hengeveld, F., p. 152 ff.)

Double-skin sandwich panels with steel sheetings and low density aluminium foam have an excellent flexural response. Experimental results highligthed the key role of the type of adhesive and its strength on the ultimate performance. Simple equations are provided to predict the stiffness, yield and plastic strength (s. article Latour, M. et al, pp. 73-80)

With the completion of the Peljeac Bridge, the northern and southern Croatian territories ended their long period of geographical isolation since their independence from Yugoslavia in June 1991. Under the severe influence of the global epidemic, the main contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), has struggled diligently for more than three years to realize the Croatian people's long-cherished aspiration. The steel structure of this bridge is purchased from raw materials, steel box girders are fabricated in the workshop, long-distance transportation, and on-site erection are all performed under EU specifications by Chinese companies. Mr. Bicheng Tang and Mr. Xuefeng Wang, the contractors' steel structure expert and construction chief manager of this project respectively, authored this technical article and described the entire manufacturing procedure of such a huge number of steel structures (s. p. 26).

Steel and composite bridges offer economic advantages, even for short and medium spans. To simplify and speed up the design process, ArcelorMittal now offers Advance Bridge Expert, a free preliminary design software that includes complex geometries and innovative solutions. The software is suitable for the pre-dimensioning of curved and/or skewed composite road, railway and pedestrian bridges according to the Eurocodes and several National Annexes. It supports the predesign of steel composite bridges, filler beam bridges and PreCoBeam/composite dowel strips using the hot-rolled section and modern steel grades libraries of ArcelorMittal up to S460, including HISTAR® grades and weathering steel (Arcorox®) according to EN 10025-5:2019.
The free version of Advance Bridge Expert can be downloaded from the following website:

As part of the AiF-FOSTA research project P1020 “Economical welded joints of high-strength steels”, extensive tests were carried out at the Institute of Steel and Timber Construction at the TU Dresden. Tested were lap joints, cruciform joints and butt joints of steels in grades S500 to S960. The picture shows the flat tensile test specimens made from butt joints with a thickness of 20 mm and a width of 35 mm in the weld area to be tested. Fully and partially penetrated butt welds were tested. In order to determine the strains in the course of the tests, strain measurements were carried out using photogrammetry in addition to inductive measurements. For this purpose, a stochastic pattern of graphite spray was applied to the test specimens and the high-frequency image recordings were digitally evaluated (s. article pp. 138-149. The building of the San Giorgio bridge in Genoa re-establishes the connection between autoroutes A10 and A7 after the tragic event of the Morandi bridge collapse of 14 August 2018.
The bridge deck layout required the use of a torsionally rigid section. This was achieved, in particular, with two longitudinal beams spaced 7.00 m apart, a curved, calendared soffit and a top slab made of composite concrete.
The new bridge was opened on 3 August 2020, finally revealing the idea of the architect, Renzo Piano: A big, white vessel moored in the valley, a bridge that enters a dialogue with the sea, with the wind, with light, a structure that encourages builders to continue building bridges as links between territories and symbols of union. (Sarcina, G. et al., pp. 14-21)
